Most engaged Bachelor couples eventually part ways but one couple has beat the odds, giving hope to their successors that love is possible on reality TV. The Bachelorette season one stars Trista and Ryan Sutter, also known as the first couple who got married in the franchise, opened up to Good Morning America about the secret to their lasting relationship and what they think of season 21’s most controversial contestant.
Many were doubtful about the couple’s engagement, including reality TV judge Simon Cowell, who gave their relationship “two weeks.” But Trista and Ryan, who exchanged vows on television in 2003, are still together after 14 years and now share two children, Maxwell Alston Sutter, 9, and Blakesley Grace Sutter, 7.
According to Trista, they wouldn’t have lasted without resilience, gratitude and forgiveness.
“I think forgiveness is a big one because no one’s perfect,” Trista said. “Neither of us are perfect.”
It also helps that Ryan, who is a professional firefighter, knows how to keep the fire burning in their relationship.
“He wrote me a sweet card, you know just out of the blue,” Trista said of her husband.
Meanwhile, the pair admits that they are still following the reality dating series that brought them together and even has advice for current Bachelor star Nick Viall. In a nutshell, let season 21 villain Corinne go.
“I actually love that they’ve added [Corrine] to the mix because it’s really fun to watch,” Ryan said. “But eventually it has to get, like, serious if he wants it to get serious. And she’s gotta go because she’s just a distraction.”
The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
