If you’re spending this Valentine’s Day with someone special, let’s hope they treat you right. If they need a reference guide for what it takes to woo someone, Pretty Little Liars has got them covered. This show has some of the most romantic moments on TV and has basically ruined all hope of love for us all. Before your Valentine’s Day celebrations, look back at these eight PLL episodes for some serious relationship goals.
1. “The Jenna Thing” (Season 1, Episode 2)
This episode features one of the earliest but most swoon-worthy moments in the Ezria relationship (and really just in the show overall.) After Ezra tells Aria that they can’t be together because he’s her teacher, of course, she’s contemplating her life in the pouring rain. (The start to any romantic moment.) Sure enough, Ezra pulls up in his car, opens the door and lets her in, literally and figuratively. The two have a hardcore make-out session, and every relationship should have at least one intense moment of passion like this.
2. “A Person of Interest” (Season 1, Episode 19)
This had to be one of the most romantic PLL episodes of all time. It hit beautiful moments between every couple at that time, but the parts we aspire to most were with Ezria, Pailey, and Haleb. Aria went all Suzy Homemaker for Ezra, surprising him with a home-cooked meal by candlelight when he got home. Emily and Paige had a blast rocking out to karaoke, shared their first kiss and then had a romantic picnic the next day. Hanna told Caleb she wants him to know every part of her before the two stripped down in the woods and slept together for the first time. Hanna also ended up there because Caleb had been kicked out of her house and she refused to let him be alone. All of these couples know how it’s done.
3. “Over My Dead Body” (Season 2, Episode 12)
This episode takes place after Hanna has been tormented multiple times by her stepsister-to-be, Kate. Kate then has the audacity to hit on Caleb at Hanna’s dad’s wedding right in front of her. Caleb proves to be the boyfriend everyone deserves, by shutting her down in the most savage way. After she makes a pass at him for how good he looks in his suit, he tells her she looks the opposite, and her dress gives her back fat. Kate then gets a taste of the embarrassment she’s been dishing to Hanna. Hanna’s got some boyfriend.
4. “A Kiss Before Lying” (Season 2, Episode 18)
Maya might have been Emily’s best relationship. I mean, we love Paige, but the girl did try to drown her at one point. Maya never did things like that. Instead, she made grand romantic gestures like the one in this episode, where she transformed her bedroom into a water-themed paradise to make Emily feel better after she found out she wasn’t allowed to swim. She even drops an amazing line to tell Emily she loves her: “I admit, I like to live life in the grey area. But the way I feel about you is crystal clear. I love you, Emily.” Come on. Does it get any better than that?
5. “CTRL: A” (Season 2, Episode 20)
A lot was on the line for Hanna in this episode, so I guess she gets a pass, but no boyfriend or girlfriend should ever really be trying to guess their significant other’s passcode. Still, if it happens, discovering that their passcode is the date of the first time you made love is sure to make you swoon. This was the case when Hanna tried to break into Caleb’s laptop, again proving he was the boyfriend everyone needs.
6. “unmAsked” (Season 2, Episode 25)
Toby’s made a lot of sacrifices to keep Spencer safe, even if it means temporarily breaking her heart. He did what he had to do, but also redeemed himself in her eyes (and ours) by his grand gestures in this episode. Not only did he convince Dr. Sullivan to come back and testify on their behalf, he sat outside the police station like a scene from a rom-com to proclaim to Spencer, “pretending not to love you was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.” All is forgiven, Toby.
7. “Stolen Kisses” (Season 3, Episode 8)
It was this episode which made fans jump on board with the Paige-Emily relationship after the heartbreaking loss of Maya. Their night-swim was one of the most romantic moments on the show and the type of thing everyone should get to experience with their significant other — an intimate moment in their shared passion. It also solidified that Emily turns to Paige when she really needs someone when she said, “I was looking for something. I was looking for somebody, and I came here.”
8. “Along Comes Mary” (Season 7, Episode 5)
This was the first proposal we got to witness on PLL (since Hanna’s failed engagement one was off-screen), and it was well worth it. After a long and still-rocky road for Aria and Ezra, he hit a home run with this beautiful candlelit engagement. His apartment was covered in lights and he got down on one knee, professed his love and said everything Aria deserved to hear before popping the question.
