Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds Discover Alien Organism in ‘Life’

Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds make contact with an alien organism in the first trailer for their space thriller “Life.”

The trailer, which launched during Sunday night’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” opens with Ariyon Bakare’s character examining a large, single cell. “We’re looking at the first proof of life beyond Earth,” he says after noting that their mission’s primary goal has been achieved.

“You’re finally a daddy,” Reynolds’ character quips. “It’s going to be a big custody battle over this one.”

All hell then breaks loose as the microscopic organism attacks and kills the scientist in a matter of seconds.

“Life” follows the International Space Station’s six-member crew as it discovers the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. The life form, unfortunately, proves more intelligent than they expected.

Excerpts from President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 “moon speech” at Rice University play throughout the trailer, making it all the more chilling. “Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again,” Kennedy says about space. “And, therefore, as we set sail we ask God’s blessing on the most hazardous and dangerous and greatest adventure on which man has ever embarked.”

The film — directed by Daniel Espinosa from a script by Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese — also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Olga Dihovichnaya. “Life” is produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis, and Julie Lynn.

The sci-fi pic, from Columbia Pictures and Skydance, hits theaters on May 26, 2017, over Memorial Day weekend.
